Never Tell Us Apart

I notice I have a habit of breaking the first rule of fiction (“write what you know”) which is why I have a song about being a peer-wannabe, a woman with kids, a woman without kids, a rodent fornicator and Tony Abbott (though empathising with the second last of those made the last one relatively simple).  Latest example: a song about what it’s like to be an identical twin.  If you or someone who looks like you happen to be an identical twin, perhaps you can tell me how accurate this is?  The tune is Never Tear Us Apart by INXS.

July 2026

Don’t tell me
What we’ve heard before
Don’t have to be a bore
We’d love you to desist

We
Were gestating
Barely there
One cell divided
And they can never tell us apart

We are twins
Had a thousand fights
But if you hurt one
Other one takes out your lights

I told you
We’re not telepaths
Read each others minds
It’s only one, do the maths

Babies dressed in
Matching clothes
Too cute to mention
Mum, Dad, could never ever tell us apart

I (don’t @ me)
I’m the smart one (don’t assume!)
Mm, you were first (by several seconds)
One cell divided (inside a womb)
And they can never tell us apart

You (so tired)
Got your hair cut (got a do)
Dyed it blue (kinda liked it)
The world just eyed it (yeah, looked right through)
Still they can never tell us apart

We
Were gestating
Barely there
One cell divided…
