The herald of King Hrothgar carried the news of Beowulf’s arrival to him, and Beowulf was eagerly welcomed. Before all at Hrothgar’s hall Beowulf declared his determination to defeat the monster Grendel (which had for so long been the bane of all warriors come to that hall) in single combat, without the aid of arms.
