Each night the demon Grendel would raid Hrothgar’s hall Heorot, gruesomely murdering many, until the hall was deserted and Hrothgar despairing. For twelve years there was no end to the horror; and then Beowulf, a well-renowned warrior, gathered a band of Geats and sailed to Hrothgar’s aid.
