Beowulf: Introduction to Chapter 13

The hall of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, had been plagued for twelve years by the murderous monster Grendel. When Beowulf defeated Grendel in single combat by tearing off its arm, there was great rejoicing, and a fine feast was held where Beowulf was praised by all, and both Hrothgar and his wife Wealhtheow gave him many generous gifts. That night, all slept easy in that hall.
