I feel that if you want to promote a particular attitude — say, the attitude that people in the SCA look after each other and do not allow bigotry and dogma to get in the way — then you can do far worse than to put it into a song and make sure it’s a major earworm. You can consider this another in the same line as Lord McGee and Oh The Baron.
June 2020
A lass, rather tipsy, wobbles off to her campsite.
A lad, ale for courage, won’t hear the word no.
Three knights ask politely: may we offer assistance?
The lad now discovers it’s time he should go.
Out walking, out walking, by moonlight and starlight
Out walking, out walking, along the town track
If you meet with a man, sir,
Who will not hear an answer:
Out walking, out walking, put ’em right in the sack!
Two friends celebrating the start of their journey,
Their love all approved, they’ve upgraded those laws.
But here’s that one expert, a dissenting opinion:
He’ll find no support here for his contrary cause.
Out walking, out walking, by moonlight and starlight
Out walking, out walking, along the town track
When their book gives less weighting
To loving than hating:
Out walking, out walking, put ’em right in the sack!
A lass and a lad having reached an agreement,
The lass finds conditions weren’t quite as he’d said.
Abandoned and lost, till a stranger assists her:
To home she’s escorted and safely to bed.
Out walking, out walking, by moonlight and starlight
Out walking, out walking, along the town track
If you can’t keep your word when
You claim you’re misheard, then
Out walking, out walking, put ’em right in the sack!
A lady, familiar yet newly upgraded,
Is wary of one who at times was uncouth.
But here he spoke plain: though I know not your reasons,
Just call on my sword, I will fight for your truth.
Out walking, out walking, by moonlight and starlight
Out walking, out walking, along the town track
Who needs be reminded,
To not be small-minded?
Out walking, out walking, put ’em right in the sack!
Out walking, you’ll meet them, the fools and the blockheads,
The ones who knock everyone’s day off its track.
It’s then you must rise, take a stand for your standards,
Grab the fools by the scruff, put ’em right in the sack.
Out walking, out walking, by moonlight and starlight
Out walking, out walking, along the town track
Grab the fools by the scruff, now,
Be firm but not rough, now
Out walking, out walking, put ’em right in the sack!
