Not Perfect

I’m a big Tim Minchin fan, and this is from one of his nicer songs, Not Perfect.  I’d been wanting to filk it for ages, and I got the first verse written down in my scratch book up to the “weirdest part” line, which is where it crashed.  At the Baronial Investiture, I was looking through that book and I realised how to fix that line.  The rest came quickly, and I got to sing it for the assembled not-many-multitudes, to good effect.

March 2020

This is my Canton, and I live in it
It’s made of schemes and loud opinions
Its archers can be hard to beat
Its people really love to eat
They’ve got a running gag about purple
And the weirdest thing is clearly shown:
This Canton isn’t widely known
But they’re still convinced they rule the whole Kingdom

This is my Canton, and it’s fine
It’s where I spend the vast majority of my time
It’s not perfect, but it’s fine
It’s not perfect

This is my Barony, and I live in it
It’s quite spread out and not too crowded
We’re not exactly stacked with peers
Though some of us have played  for years
We’re pretty good at making warm garb
And the weirdest thing about it all
Is even with this cosy hall
There’s always some who go out and fight

This is my Barony, and it’s fine
It’s where I spend the vast majority of my time
It’s not perfect, but it’s fine
It’s not perfect

This is my Kingdom, and I live in it
It’s hot and dry and wet and windy
The earth will quake, the trees will burn
Yet somehow we will never learn
We still say it’s the best place in creation
And the weirdest thing is that this place
Is made of really too much space
But despite that, it’s a very small village

This is my Kingdom, and it’s mine
It’s where I spend the vast majority of my time
It’s not perfect, but it’s mine
It’s not perfect
I’m not sure what did I do to deserve it
It’s not perfect
But it’s mine
