The Comforting Song

In the final years before the end of civilisation, attempts were made to look on the bright side.

To the tune of It’s The End Of The World As We Know It by REM.

June 2019

That’s great, it starts with a heat wave
Rising seas and hurricanes,
Biosphere has gone insane.

Life in a greenhouse, listen to the air burn
World’s gonna soon be
Minus our humanity
Heating up a lot, flood, fire, no hope
You worry if we hurry
Do we still fight, despite,
Backed into a corner, do we rally all our troops
Will our governments be clever, will we get this right?
Look at all we’re doing in the dawning
Of disaster breathing down our necks.

Women killed, reporters muffled, Trump, Putin, Kim
Shoot at that one plane – bam! down!
Uh oh, here it goes, population overgrows,
But it’ll fall, overnight, serve us right
World spins without us, doesn’t care about us,
Tell me: if we do go gentle in that night, right,
Our immolating, other-hating, raised fist guest list,
Why would we be missed?

It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky
This one’s screwed.

Six o’clock, fake news, easy pre-digested views
Rubber stamp, revamp tropic island death camp
Voting in uninformed, knee-jerking, job-shirking,
Calling for austerity, go and see a charity,
Vote oppression, here’s depression, once more, once more
Imagining a boot stamp on a face
That’s what we see, apathy, privilege and poverty,
A parliament, a parliament, a parliament of pain:
Beg ’em for solutions, beg ’em for alternatives and they disdain

It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
This one’s screwed.
This one’s screwed.

It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
This one’s screwed.

The other night I had a dream, figured out a clever scheme,
Save the whole Planet Earth, brand new rebirth
Build a big rocket fleet, take us all, nice and neat
Seven billion human beings, right into the sun.
Our immolating, other-hating, won’t be missed mess — right? Right!

It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
It’s the end of the world – if we’re lucky (Time some new beasts had a go)
This one’s screwed.
