King Hrothgar left his hall in Beowulf’s care, and that mighty warrior began to prepare himself to combat that monster Grendel that had so long harrowed the Danes. Disarming himself, Beowulf declared to his men that he would defeat Grendel through his own strength and the will of God, and so they all lay down to sleep, wary of the monster that even now was making its way through the mists towards them. With glowing eyes, Grendel surveyed the hall and consumed one of Beowulf’s men, but before it could do more, Beowulf gripped its arm in a hold it could not escape.
